How to Get Things Done

You can probably tell by now that I’m a big believer in making lists. I like lists for everything that’s gone wrong with your life and for everything you want to accomplish in life. You need a document that you can refer to. First of all, when you write it down, it allows you to focus. You can actually see in black-and-white, right in front of you, exactly what you’re dealing with, whether it be positive or negative, whether it be looking back at your past to know exactly what you’ve done wrong, or looking toward the future to know what could happen if you’re willing to work hard enough.

So in this chapter, there will be a lot of list making. As we go through these lists, you’re going to find lots of different areas where you could start to make some real changes.

Taking Responsibility

It starts with my number-one principle for turning your life around. This can’t come as a surprise to you. I’ve been talking about it throughout this book. It’s the reason I’m called the pit bull of personal development, because it’s the one thing I get my teeth into and never let go of. That thing is taking responsibility.

When it comes to getting out of your own way, nothing helps more than taking responsibility. You need to sit down and make a list about taking responsibility. Now you’re saying, “That doesn’t even make sense, Larry. How do you make a list about taking responsibility?”

Here’s what I want you to do. Get a sheet of paper, get a pen, and write down at the top “Taking Responsibility.” Then write down everything you can think of that you feel is keeping you from being successful, in every area of your life.

What’s keeping you from being successful at work? Do you know? Some things come to mind immediately; I know they do. What’s keeping you from having as much money as you would like or from having great relationships with your significant other, your kids, your family, your parents? What’s keeping you from driving the kind of car you’d like to drive or from living in the house you’ve always dreamed of or from dressing the way you’d like to dress? Name everything in the world that comes to mind that’s keeping you from having exactly what you want.

Put down why you’re broke. Put down why you’re not as healthy as you’d like to be. Put down why you weigh more than you’d like to weigh. Write it all down. I want this to be a list where you whine and complain and put down everything that makes you mad about your life. Write it all down. Don’t skip this. This is important.

When you get to the end of the list, here’s what I want you to do: I want you to draw a big X through it, and write down your name, because you are the only thing on that list that matters. You are the reason you’re not doing well at work.
